This book was unexpectedly terrible, given how much I really enjoyed the author's Ministry of Curiosities series. It's a romance more than anything else (and I do like romance!), but the world-building was minimal, the characters were flat, and the ending was unsatisfying. The Big Misunderstanding trope isn't my favorite to begin with, but it was even worse than usual in this book because **SPOILER** the hero never comes clean to the heroine! He is still lying to her about the main plot thread misunderstanding right through the end of the book. The heroine does kind of suspect the truth at the end of the book, but by that point she doesn't even really care about his lies anymore... because he's so hot.Product details

Honor Bound The Witchblade Chronicles Book 1 edition by CJ Archer Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
A witch in Elizabethan England? When witches were burned? A self-described witch who has no realistic fears for her life despite the "enemies" who know of her witch-ness? And, to make it duller, a witch who doesn't seem to have very many interesting powers or abilities, and who basically doesn't use the powers she has protagonist may as well have been a shopgirl and nothing else. Nothing in the book's details would place it in London or England, even, let alone Elizabethan England, which is one of my favorite historical periods and the major reason I downloaded the book. The Mystery aspect of this too-predictable Romance is convoluted and dreadfully drawn out, while the Romance itself is just dryer than tinder and repetitious beyond endurance. An experienced editor would have been a boon to this book. Uninteresting, unbelievable characters hampered by a wooden writing style and a convoluted, repetitious plot.
I noticed this book due to the price reduction, and, having exhausted most other highly-rated historical romances, I decided to give it a shot. I'm really glad I did. Nowadays I read the beginning of most romances and skip to the end because the major conflict is so overblown. This book kept my interest. The problem between the hero and the heroine is their keeping of secrets. It was nice to see them mature together (the hero a little later than the heroine) and build a new life together. I never felt like the author was trying to draw out the conflict. The book is tightly written, and the heroine is neither silly nor incapable. The hero and the heroine are really worthy of each other and their love at the end. The magic didn't detract from the romance (a problem that leads me to avoid most paranormal romances), and in fact seemed to come in handy sometimes even if it was portrayed as mostly a handicap.
Just my opinion, but I don't think drawing comparison to Gabaldon or Gregory was the way to go here. C.J. Archer's Honor Bound is good, definitely worth the 2.99 it is currently listed for on , but, and I don't mean this to sound snarky, it doesn't have a thing on Outlander or The Queen's Fool. Even as a tease the line seems a just tad ostentatious. Again, not trying to be discouraging or demeaning, just offering up a little perspective.
That being said, I liked this one. It took a while to figure that out, but I got there. I spent a lot of time wondering when Isabel's secret was going to be incorporated into the plot and that sort of put a damper on my enthusiasm for the rest of the story. Up to the halfway point Isabel is working as an apothecary's assistant, trying to convince herself she can live a normal life, refusing to use or even acknowledge her abilities. I was about to give up hope and then, there it was. Not only that, it wasn't presented half-heartedly in some cheese filled plot twist. No, it was beautifully incorporated as an essential aspect of book. I was pretty impressed, and no, I'm not just saying this to make up for my earlier comments. I stand by both one hundred percent.
Archer's love birds possess some very modern sensibilities, I personally like period personalities to fit the era of their story, but beyond that I can't fault the book. Not about shout Archer's praises from the rooftop or anything but I'm certainly up for the second installment of the series.
I enjoyed the mystery plot, but mostly the complicated love story between the 2 main characters, both well built and relatable. This is not the usual hero or heroine but 2 people with strong and weak points trying to figure out themselves and their relationship, while the plot develops without being predictable or boring.
It includes a bit of 'paranormal', which makes the story more original and thrilling but this is not the main story line in the book.
All other secondary characters are also well built and developed, they never fall into stereotypes so the author keeps you guessing who is friend and who is a traitor, because they offer different angles and motivations and you get to peek into their pasts.
I recommend this novel to anyone looking for a not-so-long story with action, passion (explicit sex scenes, but they are important to understand the characters and their love story) and mystery. AND a bit of magic )
I'm always a little suspect of historical romance novels. I read the occasional romance novel, if it's particularly funny or well-written, but more often than not, it's a weak story interspersed with random sex scenes. I have no objection to a quality sex scene, if it fits a story, but I can't stand books that are just excuses for them.
This novel is quite the opposite. The main characters are sometimes a bit idiotic in their inability to come to terms, but the underlying mystery is solid; the characters are otherwise interesting; the novel was fairly difficult to put down, once I got into it. I questioned the reactions to the revelation that the main character was a witch, and I would have liked to see a bit more information about apothecaries and that time period, because both are quite interesting. I don't think it would take much revision to take this from a pretty good novel to a very good one.
I'd rate it as follows mystery-4, romance-3, fantasy (magic)-2.5, historical-3. In the end, I liked it, and I'll look for more from this author. I'd love to see her revise a bit more and write a great novel. She's off to a solid start.
This book was unexpectedly terrible, given how much I really enjoyed the author's Ministry of Curiosities series. It's a romance more than anything else (and I do like romance!), but the world-building was minimal, the characters were flat, and the ending was unsatisfying.
